Firefighter Safety Guidelines

Supplemental tool disclaimer, PPE compliance, failure procedures.

Overview

C-THRU is designed to augment firefighter vision and situational awareness, not replace sound tactics or safety procedures.

These guidelines ensure safe and effective use of the system in both training and operations.

1. PPE Compliance

  • Always wear full PPE and SCBA when deploying C-THRU.

  • Do not modify helmet mounts or alter device placement.

  • Secure cables and components to prevent entanglement.

2. Visibility and HUD Management

  • Verify clear HUD alignment before entry.

  • If fogging or blackout occurs, wipe the HUD and lens or flip the HUD up to regain vision.

  • Never fixate solely on the display—maintain environmental awareness.

3. Communication Discipline

  • Continue standard radio communication even when using C-THRU messaging.

  • Use PAR and EVAC confirmations regularly.

  • Always verbally confirm Mayday calls over radio.

4. Device Failure Procedures

If the Navigator malfunctions or loses image:

  1. Announce issue over radio.

  2. Flip HUD up.

  3. Continue using traditional search and orientation methods.

  4. Report issue post-incident for documentation and maintenance.

5. Situational Awareness

C-THRU enhances visual input but does not replace:

  • Thermal imaging cameras (TICs)

  • Sound and temperature cues

  • Hose line orientation

  • Crew accountability and verbal updates

Safety Statement
